hungry eyes

at tonight's screening

of paris, texas

i’ve never seen so many people

in this dingy room

and i come here

a lot

a lot of young men

of a certain kind, maybe

they’d like to be the

dog as lonely man

man as lonely dog

to wear the lonely cap

red

to slice it through

the desert sky

i’m here with

a man

intensely phobic of reality

a life clattered with old things

engineered to prevent

the weight of knowing firsthand

this place

and time

well

this approach is

perfect for imagining there were

better times

times when

when a lonely dog man could

be beautiful

eating nothing

in bed wanting someone

to care about

the shoes and hair

peculiarities

someone to forgive the

habits worn deep

to erase

life

someone’s here

not knowing

the dust-up

how

the light was just

the same

and how

it's been like this

the you role

the me role

if i’m the girl

behind the glass

if i’m the boy

blowing in the wind

if we’re sand

it's still

bone hard

to be bored with

the obvious beauty

of your life

to clear the screen

around the

terrible edges

of the adult

world

in my eyes

i’d like

to be the parent

to love as a

motion picture

then when the wind blows

to leave my family

behind

to do the bad thing

and be forgiven

cheek rivulets made good

in warm light

of whatever media

captures

dust to

fact

fact to energy

energy back

at long last

into

light

another flawed grandma passes to next realm
so they gather the big table
to eat ravioli
and workshop memorial speeches
     she had a good heart….
     according to her doctor!
it wasn’t in the zeitgeist to break generational trauma back then

and yet what mother wouldn’t want to do at least just a bit better than hers did

Jo/Christmas Eve

We suppose that everyone’s at home with child,

When did we get so old, I was 36 then,

Coach seat fabric holds me in place

It burns to move

House red is a party trick for 12 quid,

Keeps me thin and sick.

I had watched my friends tooling and swelling on Stella,

Cave painting on the lacquer with cigarette ash, I was 18 then,

Used to be 20 minutes for a drink, where is everyone,

Hazed in countless shades of air bnb grey,

we slide off the cubicle,

find Mary Shelley on the wall,

her sepia a spew, no longer matches her panel,

So I was always 45, then.

Body Work

It was true what they said

It was all in my head

I swallowed over and over

til it lodged in my throat

With deep breathing I managed

to coax it into my lungs

Hunger and hangover

it seeped into my stomach

Whence it moved on its own

Worked out by my bowels

Until the next time I eat shit

and it all begins again

from the top
