poem a day

My beloved witness was one year older than poem-a-day.

She appeared in the first January of my adult life.

By the second, I had cats to love and poems to email

from my desk at the Museum of Biblical Art (defunct).

By the seventeenth, I had everything. At first.

Now I am one week deep in to having less.

This is barely a poem. This is almost an experiment.

At work I tell everyone about her. Now they know:

I talk too much in staff meetings, I have greasy hair

and I have a dead cat. They don’t know

about poem-a-day. They don’t know about you.

Don’t worry, I’m looking for a new job. I won’t give in

and give them everything, I won’t give them you.

I don’t usually write like this. It feels ok.

I want someone else to hear the syncopation of my thought loops.

This, to me, is the goal

of it. Of this. Some of it. But the rhythm has changed.

You would think it would come together, click, boom,

the January of it all, the kitten saved from frigid

streets in Brooklyn, the wintriness of what we do here,

the beginnings of all the years, my fortieth birthday

and the death. It should make for an incandescent synthesis

of every line I ever wrote, re-birth of language that sets me

roaring into February. But thank god we all know better here.

Thank god, and maybe next year, we can figure out

who that is

even though the Museum of Biblical Art is now,

maybe rightfully,

defunct.

Forcing

Angelic un-inspiration
wash how fresh
I see my heart,
uncanny quail egg
too small to cost
so dearly, feels not,
feels naught,
fuels not,
cracks rot,
cavalier grocer
edgy expirations
novelty temptations,
who here buys this
buys that, not me,
(parent voice)
angry glances at the other
cat
force sweetness in this
toddler talk of death. Time is
Time was. Time’s past we
don’t know what’s next
I look for tears to share
but that’s not what
we shed

Mantra

My god is my grief
my good is my god
is not good my grief

A Walk in the Old Neighborhood

Five years’

tyrannical hold

on the rest

of a life,

revisiting visitations

ghosts greet

me everywhere I go,

houses disappear

from hilltops

morph

On corners.

Content

I cannot visit

this decade past

because

I am still here.

I am still here.

Who here

will be old

most

of their lives?

All of us, I hope?

American Shorthair

I thought I would get on a bus.

Wailing and awake,

I thought I would leave.

There would be huge gaps,

I thought about it from the outside,

remote viewing.

I thought it would prove

my love, broken egg world,

new consciousness hatching.

I got on a bus. Just briefly,

the same one as always,

I rode for ten minutes. Bought things.

Texted, distributing

unshareable grief.

I had to go home.

My companion. Soul growing older in my room.

You deserved more from me.

We all deserve more from each other.

My companion.

Seventeen years on my pillow.

One day Matt will

meet you there,

but not yet.

Like every life, there was a good year,

two,

even seven.

Like every life, those

years

were long ago.

Or where they? I don’t know.

I thought I would start to run.

It was January, 2008.

It is January, 2025.

What does seventeen mean

in numerology?

I don’t know,

my companion,

I don’t know.

I can’t remember our past ten years,

When her world was always the same.

But isn’t that what cats want?

Unchanging world, the patterns

of the day, birds in the morning

raccoons at night. If you hated

your roommate would you live on

from spite? In a body unblessed by

bad beginnings, small and allergic

trembling with love

Bad Day at Work

This is not the end.

The slip-sticky hands of “what did I do”

the churn: “I have to,” the scream: “I shouldn’t have”

the velveteen whisper “it’s fine in the end.”

This is not the end.

We will see each other one year from now.

We will see each other ten years from now.

It will be different.

We don't know who will die.

At work we cosplay our ancestors,

making our peace with the whims of the king.

Sneaking suspicions “this isn’t real”

it’s a fight for our lives,

the stupidest part of them,

but it's not the end.

In the sculpture garden each stone was carefully chosen.

I am no stone. I am not chosen.

I blew in like a truck horn,

spoiling the peace,

not even really there.

The peace is serving no one.

Sanctuary.

A sanctuary is inherently political,

It hides the fugitive.

Sanctuary invites a fight.

I take sanctuary in my family.

We want to fight.

We are hidden.

fragments

Lordless manor of the mind,

empty hills,

no compact, contract,

no political system that could not exist as they insist for lack of perfectly round mounds and concentric circles of serfs,

you can’t fool me,

you generations of high school,

you dawn breakers of this era,

and the one before,

and the one before,

or the big one they're all in,

the big one we're all in,

if we're all in,

if we're not cusping,

if we're not over the cusp lip

(ick)

I had the missing piece,

Right here in my…

Bigger

Hangnails on still hands,

so visible,

paused

above the keys.

Afraid to simply list

the pleasures of the day.

Who is owed wonder?

Who has earned it?

I floated above my desk,

each mannered greeting

untethered me,

and in floating

gravity became

the headstream of awe,

and this new state banal.

Fatigued, I floated home.

Vague, diffuse, unearned,

the ache of office days.

The clerk feels his life

unreal.

I feel my life.

I think I am owed wonder.

Proximity to celebrity?

Or something whispered

by my unmet god?

Desire grows, for things.

The monitor on my desk

Is disconnected,

geriatric hard drives

maybe harbor wonder?

I float a little further still.

One hundred forty years

of disconnection.

And eons of illusion.

I would never have been

a hero on my horse,

at least that

I know

and thus must

not

mourn

Conservation Mission

A fever held me, divine certainty, hot dry pillow voice telling me:

“Go to the Aquarium.” Yes, I will yes, at any cost, the New Age hum

the dread and awe and nearly forty face in convex arcs of plexi,

the terror of the rising tides and joy of saying maybe, yes, you’ll study fish

be a scientist whose life is spent in thrall to gills at war with our convenience,

screaming STOP but taking strength from simply knowing such strange facts as:

this fish sports a toothy tongue, and these sharks, unlike some, may rest.

Do not be afraid. Rowan, still only three, knows that coral dies and bleaches white,

but to know a fact, to see a fish, to feel the rain and see the penguins proudly wet,

Is only joy. Is only, only joy. Is only joy. Is only joy. Is only joy. Is only, only joy.

The Source

Grunt grumbly snuffle shuffle

pant patter rustle sputter

worm tangle mulch munch

branch thrash slam dance,

halting holding dog shot

fishing twice but that’s a lot,

walked into the woods alone

rural person car caught

puzzle fulcrum cornerstone

moldy foldy rented home

close squeeze eyes head

grasp slapping scream slam

finger simply isn’t on

brain snagged twigs snap

anhedonic mirror peer

why do I keep coming back

little yellow mind trap

Downward Spiral

The worseness of it all,

Neurasthenic weightlessness

meets certain doom.

Doom gives purpose,

but I’m not religious.

It’s good to see a friend.

This is unchanging, not worsening,

and even the grief

gives time together weight

And yet

The worseness worsens,

and what’s worst,

it’s curdling a time of ease

unknown to my ancestors

and, one assumes, yours.

Though there are those among us,

I hope, from elsewhere.

Hope? Who said that.

But now it’s in the room.

I think I just said

I hope we’re not alone,

that some ancestors

are aliens.

So now the hope is happening

but only in a sci-fi sense,

and so it only makes sense

to apply sci-fi sense

To everything!

And now I’m cooking.

Maybe I am religious?

Suddenly less weightless

and doom feels delicious.

So this is how it happens

and further curdles

my time of ease.

But listen:

It’s good to see a friend.

This is unchanging, not worsening.

And yes, there is the grief

Giving time together weight.

I am not weightless, nor religious.

Nor neurasthenic. Nor certain

Of doom,

Though doom is certain.

I am not certain.

Uncertainty is not weightlessness.

My optimistic unknowing

Is my offering to you.
