I'm kept awake past midnight
past the noise makers and the shouts
"Happy New Year!"
God these kids are so excited
for a year that will be much like the last
if not worse.
I guess I'm glad they don't know that yet.
As the clock ticks past one, I stifle
the urge to yell "SHUT UP!"
It's good. It's good they are in a place
where they feel safe enough
to be this hopeful.
