hungry eyes

at tonight's screening

of paris, texas

i’ve never seen so many people

in this dingy room

and i come here

a lot

a lot of young men

of a certain kind, maybe

they’d like to be the

dog as lonely man

man as lonely dog

to wear the lonely cap

red

to slice it through

the desert sky

i’m here with

a man

intensely phobic of reality

a life clattered with old things

engineered to prevent

the weight of knowing firsthand

this place

and time

well

this approach is

perfect for imagining there were

better times

times when

when a lonely dog man could

be beautiful

eating nothing

in bed wanting someone

to care about

the shoes and hair

peculiarities

someone to forgive the

habits worn deep

to erase

life

someone’s here

not knowing

the dust-up

how

the light was just

the same

and how

it's been like this

the you role

the me role

if i’m the girl

behind the glass

if i’m the boy

blowing in the wind

if we’re sand

it's still

bone hard

to be bored with

the obvious beauty

of your life

to clear the screen

around the

terrible edges

of the adult

world

in my eyes

i’d like

to be the parent

to love as a

motion picture

then when the wind blows

to leave my family

behind

to do the bad thing

and be forgiven

cheek rivulets made good

in warm light

of whatever media

captures

dust to

fact

fact to energy

energy back

at long last

into

light
