A Time for Honesty

 My thing,

and I would tell any of you this on a first date,

is that I love King Arthur.

The cooler I look the better this lands.

Lately I have not looked cool.

Lately I am become a pickled, briny bitch.

Lately I have felt some big once and future feelings.

I love King Arthur

because he’s out of his gourd.

His whole existence is a crisis of faith for humanity.

He believes too many things at once.

He stakes his kingdom on a cup.

I am open to further foundational myths

that are fantasy termites in disguise,

eating away at the girders of nationhood.

This is just the one I know.

I love King Arthur

because his reign means nothing.

The legend states:

the greatest king of all

leaves no legacy,

which feels generous

to all of us.

No pressure.

Tragedy or romance,

it really doesn't matter.

I love King Arthur

because I am a girl,

and it’s my right

to identify with a king.

I do not like Lancelot.

I do like Gawaine.

When I got older,

I got into Yvain.

I look like shit and I love King Arthur!

I had to look up "Questing Beast" again

but for poetry, it's too perfect

so I’ll retreat,

in defeat

For now
